I love summer! I mean I really, really, really love summer.
I’m serious.
I was born in January in the Midwest so maybe that’s why I loathe the cold. Maybe the day I entered into this world I was greeted by single digits with a wind chill of 40 below zero. Maybe I came out, got a chill, I started screaming and my hatred for all things cold began.
I don’t really consider myself a super girly girl. I have fun getting dolled up on occasion but I also really love hanging out in a baggy sweatshirt, yoga pants, sneakers and a ball cap.
Except when it’s summer.
In the summer I’m all about the dress.
My love for dresses started about 12 years ago when I started a new job where the dress code was pretty relaxed. Jeans and tennis shoes were the norm. The first summer I worked there I remember was very, very hot. Hotter than normal for our area. Jean felt way too hot so I bought a bunch of light weight summer dresses because it was the least confining and constricting thing I could come up. That’s when the love-fest started.
Since then I’ve been wearing dresses about 5 days a week during the summer. I have a ton of them!
Why do I love dresses so much? Here are my top 5 reasons:
1. One and Done
Waking up early in the morning I don’t always feel like thinking…. my brain is sleepy. With dresses I only have to make 1 decision. No thoughts about which top and which bottom I want to pair together. No dilemmas about mixing and matching separate pieces to make an acceptable outfit. Grab 1 hanger from the closet, slip it on and DONE.
2. Comfort is key
Almost all of the dresses in my closet are flowy and loose. I think that only 1 or 2 have anything close to resembling a belt or feel at all fitted. Loose and comfortable with my legs free from any sort of constricting fabric makes this girl happy.
3. Cool as a cucumber
Did I mention already that I live in a city that frequently feels hotter than the sun? With a dress I always feel cooler because HELLO………air flow to my lady bits. :)
4. Versatility
I love to stretch a buck and I always consider the cost per wearing before I buy anything. Almost any event you need to attend can be considered “dress appropriate”. Just decide if you need to dress things up or dress things down, pick the right footwear and jewelry and you’ll be set……I even have several dresses that can double as a swimsuit cover-up.
5. Easy on the wallet
Even if you look for bargains - separate tops and bottoms usually run about $30 a piece, which makes a 2 piece outfit at least $60 if you’re lucky. Most of the dresses currently on rotation in my closet, I paid between $20 - $40 (some even less than that). A whole outfit for $20? Yes please.
Just like my shoe collection I will always be on the lookout for dresses to add to my closet. I frequently check out dresses on my favorite store’s websites. If I actually step foot in a store I usually take at least a quick walk through the dress department. I have been known to stop strangers on the street to ask where they bought their adorable dress.
My love for the dress will continue.
